[Supras] Help for import to the US

Darren,

I was thinking the same thing, just driving it over with my dawg. When I
go, my principle residence will still be here, even though I have a house in
TX, so my passport will still be valid. I have an L1-B visa, soon to be an
L1-A (they wouldn't give me a TN lol).

Sure did help a lot, Darren. Thanks!

Eric

PS, no one here

What I did was drove the car over to the US from Ontario (Niagara Falls
border). They'll ask for your documentation but nothing specific about the
car, I don't think. Just make sure you have all of your immigration papers,
work permit, car title and insurance, ID etc.

Then, in the state you're in, go to the DMV and tell them you want to switch
it over from Canadian tags. You'll most likely have to pay some
tax/duty........the DMV guy actually came out and visually inspected my
Supra after I told him it's not worth very much so I paid tax/duty on a
value of about $2000. if I remember correctly. You might want to call the
DMV and inquire before going into the office.

That's all it takes. If the process is changed since 9/11, I doubt it'll
change very much.

It's a lot simpler to just drive it across the border and then go to the DMV
of your destination state to switch it rather than going through the
"import" process from Canada.

Oh, one thing I remember was a problem was when I switched my driver's
licence over to Florida, they wanted to see my immigration papers......I had
a TN work Visa (something to do with NAFTA)

I didn't want to switch my Ontario tags over but I kept getting pulled over
(about 4 times) and the officer(s) asked how long have I been in the
state.....I think there's some law about switching the plates over to your
"new" address. But in any case, I met my wife here and got married so I
really had to switch it over to Florida tags.

Hope I was able to help. Good luck on your move.
