[Supras] Toyota Wiring Hack?

I had a no start condition in my mkiii, battery good, no interior lights even, so I open the hood and notice a nice bloom of corrosion around the primary wire at the side of the positive battery terminal. When I pull the batt terminals to clean them off real good, the primary wire just falls away, (problem found). I clip off the end of the wire and try to strip off enough insulation to put a new connector on, only the extremely weathered insulation breaks about eight inches down leaving me with a bunch of exposed wire. So I'm going to be splicing in a new piece. So I go to the parts place and get 10 ga wire, connectors and the twist on type butt connectors. I have to cut away some of the factory plastic wire covering to get at some fresh insulation, and low and behold, it has already been patched! Not only that, the original wire was either 6 or 8 gauge, crimped to 10 gauge, again this is all under the factory wire covering. It was crimped with a copper figure eight type connector and covered in shrinkwrap. That plastic covering is wraped right into the harness! I guess it's worked for twenty years (it's an 87), so what is there to complain about? But it sure doesn't seem right, especially having two different guages of wire in the same line. Just curious, if anyone else has found this or is mine "one of a kind" (what a claim to fame).
