To answer the question directly, if your rims and lug nuts are not "acorn" or countersunk at some angle so that the lug nuts center each stud to the hole in the rim, thus centering the wheel to the hub, then yes you should / "must" have either a hub centric rim, which fits snugly to your hub, or have a hub centric adaptor ring which mates your rim to your hub.
The rings are available on ebay, and probably many rim store, just search hubcentric and more than likely you will find what you need.
Literally speaking, if you want to know, once the nuts/studs are tightened the face to face contact of the rim and hub takes most if not all of the "weight" of the car, the hubcentric, or the stud centrics just server to get the wheel properly lined up as the wheel is mounted.
