Jim:
Please let me know what you have with gears in decent condition. With
your experience I'm sure you know this, but things to look for are
indentations in synchro ridge cones, tooth wear or pitting, and pitting
where roller or needle bearings are, in the back of the clutch gear and
in the cluster gear where the needle bearings are. Ridges in the
synchro cone ridges will cause gear change grinding because the synchro
ring ridges will not cut through the oil film, and cause gear grinding
during shifting. One other place to look for pitting wear is on the
cluster gear shaft. The triangular synchro engagement projections on
each sliding gear should be reasonable as well. A complete rebuild
should include bearings, synchro rings, rear seal, needle bearings and
rollers for the cluster and the recess in the clutch gear. Sometimes the
circular wire energizing springs for the synchros are also included.
Unless shifted by a gorilla, shift rails and forks should generally be OK.
So lemme know what you have. Take care, and have a good new year.
