A piece of perhaps 3/8" semi-rigid hose makes a very good "movable ear"
for tracking down hard to detect sound sources, the other end held of
course to your real ear.  If you need it to be ridgid at the distant end
to get under the manifold, stick a piece of copper tubing in it and bend
it as necessary.  Hope this helps.  Its worked for me innumerable times.
