Not confusing at all if you actually read what I've been saying. I've been saying that carrying debit cards imposes no more of a fraud-based financial risk to a consumer than does carring ATM cards.
Let's not forget that Visa and Mastercard both assure that their zero liability policies apply to ALL consumer Visa or Mastercard branded cards, whether or not they are "credit" or "debit" cards -- provided the transaction in question is a signature based transaction. You can readily confirm this on both of their websites right now if you need to. Which seems to establish now that debit cards are also no more unsafe than credit cards, and really invalidates the arguement that one must only use credit cards instead of debit cards.
Now to answer your question, if I had both an ATM card and a signature based debit card, I would much rather the ATM card be in my lost wallet. That way the card that's actually useful to me is still in my pocket, where I have access to it to use it. But above all, I'd be most upset if the jar of cash under my matress got lost.
