Mike - alternators for 12 volt batteries need to put out 14 - 14.2 volts to
keep the battery charged and run the car. As other people have suggested the
problem is probably not your battery. A quick check if your willing to try
it is to start the car and while it's running disconnect the NEGATIVE
battery cable - the car should keep running from the power generated by the
alternator. If it doesn't (and I don't think it will) it explains why the
battery keeps going dead - your constantly discharging it because the
alternator isn't putting out enough juice.
If the above test results in the car stopping then using your new digital
meter I would disconnect both battery leads and measure the resistance from
the negative battery wire to ground and from the positive battery cable to
where it connects on the alternator - both of these should be zero (at least
less then 1) ohms. If it's higher then that then the cable that reads high
is bad or you have a bad connection somewhere along it's line.
And just for kicks I'd check to see if the alternator belt was lose or
worn - if it's too lose it will slip under load and the voltage output will
be impacted. And while most times a slipping belt makes a squeal I have seen
them slip without making noise.
Good luck.
