I think he means the drive gear for the oil pump.  You need some way to keep it from moving when you undo the bolt. I took an aluminum bar and put to long bolts through it so that they engage the gear spokes.  That keeps the gear from rotating, and then a wrench removes the bolt.  

Removing the crank pulley is more challenging. That bolt is tight. I needed a 4 foot gas pipe extension on a breaker bar, but I'm a weakling. You also need some way to keep the crank from rotating.  5th gear works well if it's a manual.
