[Supras] Timing belt replacement

Thanks for the advice.

I am surprised that the local big boxes don't stock the belt, tensioner or
even the water pump.

I assume there isn't any special tools to remove the oil pump or cam gears.

Thanks again

Bob

In addition to what you have mentioned...

I would suggest the crank and oil driveshaft seals. Plus new cam cover
seals and CPS o-ring. Replace the thermostat. You may also need to think
about rebuilding the fan clutch if it is covered in silicone oil or spins
freely when cold. Also consider new belts for the PS, A/C, and alternator.

I replaced my water pump and idler pulley. The old water pump was pretty
stiff to turn compared to the new one, but was not leaking. The idler did
not seem to be bad but I replaced it anyway. It's also straight forward to
replace the radiator if it looks suspect, as that has to comes out as well.

I figure that since my 89 is approaching 50k on the original timing belt it
may be time to change it.

There is some seepage of oil coming from the front cover so the belt must be
on borrowed time.

With my MR2 the oil pump is behind the timing belt and is the cause of most
of the seepage from the front of the engine but it appears that the oil pump
is located inside the oil pan on this one so what is the most common cause
of the seepage?

I just don't' want to tear down a running car just to find out that I don't
have the parts I need.

I assume I need a water pump just because it is behind the belt, maybe a
tensioner pulley, and cam seals are never a bad idea but what else is there
that I need?

Bob
