Bill, if you are using stock head bolts, Reg Reimer has
had them tested and found the proper torque value to reach
the yield region is 72-75ft-lbs. This was done many years
ago. Reg is no doubt a very scientific person - check
out his website: http://www.monsterhorsepower.com/.

Toyota got it wrong, plain and simple. It may of been
enough for the 5M and the spec was likely just carried over.
We really have no idea how the 7M was developed those 22
yrs ago.

Why people go over 75ft-lbs with stock bolts I do not know.
They basically do not understand that more is not always
better, that they are overstretching the bolts.

ARP's however need more torque as they are of a different
material.

Others may increase the torque spec with little more than their own personal experience as test data. My goal here is to get a general consensus and then make my own final decision, based on this, plus my own 34 years as a boat mechanic. Over the years, I have watched many "smart" engineers, companies and individuals make honest mistakes. I just want the best guess of all of them combined. I guess the gasket will go on dry, with a torque of about 70. I can live with that. We'll see if I'm smart or dumb. I'll have nobody to blame but myself if it fails again.
