Well, I guess that's the whole underlying issue here: determining exactly WHO the "smart people" are. The Toyota engineers are not dummies; yet they built the engine that has this inherent problem. Others may increase the torque spec with little more than their own personal experience as test data. My goal here is to get a general consensus and then make my own final decision, based on this, plus my own 34 years as a boat mechanic. Over the years, I have watched many "smart" engineers, companies and individuals make honest mistakes. I just want the best guess of all of them combined. I guess the gasket will go on dry, with a torque of about 70. I can live with that. We'll see if I'm smart or dumb. I'll have nobody to blame but myself if it fails again.
