[Supras] Question on Intercooler Kits

Brian,

Sounds good.? I will just get the upper coated.?

As for the HKS SSQV.? I had the same problem as you with the engine stumbles.? There are two things I did that works.?

One is to adjust the SSQV?and make it tighter so it wont let as much air out.? But this may not be good for the turbo and may induce back spin on the fins.

Second one is to leave the stock?bypass valve?in with the SSQV.? The stock bypass valve?job?makes the AFM happy.? The SSQV will let out any excess air out since your boosting higher then stock and higher then what the stock bypass valve can handle.? This combination works for me and I do not get any stumbling.

I have been leaning tword getting the AMS intercooler since it is a direct bolt in.? Have you herd anything about the Speaco or the Cartech intercoolers?? They both claim to be a direct bolt in with stock piping as well.

Thanks,
Brandon

Brandon, this is my opinion. Others should chime in if they see otherwise. I would not coat the lower pipe, this pipe will see the most heat and in the case of an IC system you want to remove heat, not retain it like the exhaust. This being the case (and the gains may be minor) I think you'd be better off leaving the lower pipe uncoated from a heat transfer standpoint as it would allow it to remove more heat than if it were ceramic coated. Shiny, bright surfaces (polished look) will transfer less heat than a dull black surface. The surface color however will have little effect compared to material property and any coating applied. I have a black coated lower pipe and silver (powder coat) upper pipes, didn't have $$ for ceramic at the time.

?

Some say that the upper pipes shouldn't be coated because they too receive air flowing under the hood. I think at a minimum if you're going to have pieces coated the '3000' pipe and anywhere over the turbo should be considered as these sit directly above heat sources. The others are to be debated, is it better to reduce heatsoak when sitting still or take advantage of underhood air that's already come through the IC and radiator? I've seen many WRX guys complain about how hot the intercooler gets sitting directly above the engine when they're not moving.

?

As for the BOV, I'm not sure. Mine is located near the turbo. I've never noticed heat problems with it but am unable to run the stock BOV along with it because of it's location (this could be a concern for you, even with the HKS SSQV the engine stumbles when coming to idle at times)

Brian,

I think I am going to get the Cooleeze Piping from suprasport.com, but have a few qestions.? I have the option of getting the upper pipes ceramic coated and the bottom just powder coated.

I know it is a debate but do you find it necessary to ceramic coat the bottom?? Does the air under the car really cool it that much? It coats an an additional $90 to ceramic the bottom with the top for a total of $180 to ceramic?both.

As for the BOV.? They give an option to mount it at the stock location or the AFM location.? Do you find near stock better even know it is hot over the turbo or do you find the Cooler location at the AFM is better.? I know having the BOV is better closer to the throtle body so is at the AFM too far?

Again thanks for your input.?

Brandon

Brandon, I'm using the AMS setup. I bought the pipes used and later got the intercooler to go with them (although they were offered in different variations, 2.25"? or 2.5" inlets to match stock or to match the upgraded pipes. I'd imagine the Ebay pipes are a project for that price.

?

The coating would be nice but you'll get debates from all sides on that (I believe you'd want uncoated under the car, from turbo to IC, to take advantage of cooler undercar air and then coated anywhere in the engine bay)

Brian,

?

Thanks for your input and when I do get the pipes I will turn down my boost controler just in case.? My intercooler is curently dented and I could use a new one but buying the pipes first has corssed my mind.? Have you herd anything good about cooleeze pipes from suprasport.com ($500-800 depending on the coating)?? Or did you just buy some pipes off E-bay??

Thanks,
Brandon

Maybe that name was before my time but I remember dual stock ICs with PVC piping.

To the original poster, not all of the kits are a direct swap. Some of the larger cores might require moving some things around like the coolant reservoir, etc. The stock IC is a good unit and some testing was done years ago to prove it can flow and cool pretty well. The big advantage for the IC is pressure drop, in which case the same boost at the manifold will come on quicker and with less work from the turbo.

Stock piping uses a lot of rubber so it will flex when pressurized, hard pipes will deliver the target pressure quicker (assuming same dia.) and more efficiently.

Keep in mind, if you're seeing 14 now with the stock pipes/IC, the turbo may be producing 19psi or so. Once the systems are freed up (I freed 4-5 psi when replaced) you might see 14 psi with 16 produced at the turbo. I'd suggest starting with piping if you don't want to go all out. That made the bigger difference in my case.

I bought one back in the day from Joe Edwards.? Who remembers that name now?
