Bernie,
FWIW, I've been using the Dawes ball & spring boost controller for years and haven't blown my engine yet, and that includes a lot of track days. There's no spiking like the bleeder-valve style manual boost controllers. It has always worked so well that I never felt a need to spend hundreds for an electronic unit. Just my experience.
Suggest a K&N filter for your intake - I'm sure you can find one that will fit in the space you have.
Patrick

Time permitting, I'm going to make up a resistive voltage divider
tonight for the stock boost gauge. If the ball and spring boost
controller proves inaccurate, it will be replaced. I have already
built
a system based on a small well known commercial back pressure relief
valve with a check valve in reverse parallel with it.
