I've had great luck with the HKS VPC, if you can find one used that would be 
a good unit for you imo.

sensor between the turbo and air filter/intake?

It positions the sensor between the turbo and throttle body as opposed to in 
front of the turbo.  I'm hoping that moving it much closer to the throttle 
will help improve throttle response.  Also the car won't be crippled when 
blowing off the odd intercooler pipe as it is with the AFM.

Myself..custom ECU, and the..crap..I dont recall the hotwire AFM
replacement
out there for the 7M, but that'd be the trick for a custom ECU setup.

The more HP you want, the slimmer your tuning margin of error becomes at
the
same time.

You can stumble your way to 400Hp somewhat reliably, but you cant make
450Hp
off Ebay with 5 wrenches and a wideband reliably.
