My beloved 1985 Corolla GT-S was stolen in 1991. They located the car
and had it hauled to a holding yard.

I met with the Adjuster there, and he said, from the missing parts and
its age (six years old, missing seats, wheels, interior pieces and
radio) they were going to call it a Total Loss (I don't get
it,either...). I told him I wanted to keep the car. He said, here's what
I can do. I can total the car and then sell it to you wholesale, and
then you are your own 'contractor' to put the car back together. But,
once you do this, YOU are liable for any other damage that you find in
the process of repairing it or after.

So, I bought the car back for $300 (not bad for a $3600 book, which is
what they were going to *pay* me!) and took a check for $3330. I figured
I would have a few bucks left in my pocket, but by the time I rounded up
all the pieces to put it back together, the bill came up to...$3600.
BUT, I got my car back and put it back together. The caveat: when they
stole the wheels, they dropped the passenger's side on the ground and
chrunched the bearings in the rear axle. I had to have those replaced,
but, I still have the car sitting in the back yard. The other thing was,
even though it was a different interior and seats, I got all the pieces
I needed from a Corolla SR-5 rather than a GTS, so the seats were
different, not the 6-way sport seats like the GTS. But I still have it,
and it runs, but is now fairly rusty...

And it got stolen with 135,000 miles on it...it now has 259,000...
