[Supras] installing MKIV engine mounts experience

Hi Bob,
In the 17 years that I have owned my MK3 I have replaced the mounts twice because they completely broke (once by the dealer in 94 and once by myself in 2003) and now the 3rd set is on its way to break. The liquid filled mounts on the 89+ MK3 are great for vibration elimination, but they don't last, especially if engine hp and torque are increased. So I wanted to eliminate the possibly of breakdown of the mounts (when they go, they'll split into two parts, top and bottom) and reduce engine side-to-side movement as much as possible. I haven't run the car yet to find out how much comfort is sacrificed using the MKIV mounts. Hopefully I'll have her running by this weekend and let everyone now my impressions.

Thanks,
/Khalid 90T

Why did you replace them? Were they physically broken?

Bob

Hi!
I just finished installing the 98 MKIV engine mounts on my 90 T. The
part number for the mounts that I got form Jeff is 12360-46111. The cost is
something like $54 each. These mounts are much firmer and cheaper than the
MK3's liquid filled (89+ models). The mounts basically fit with no major
problems (I have to thank the person on the list that provided the tip about
using the 98 mounts and I am sorry I don't recall their name right now).
The only modification that was required was to drill a hole with a 9/32"
drill bit in the engine brackets. This was necessary because the 98 engine
mounts have a guide pin, for the bracket side, which is on the opposite side
of the MK3's engine mounts. Additionally, the location of the hole to be
drilled is at the edge of the bracket, so you have to position the drill bit
such that the center of the circle is about 1/8" from the edge (so its more
like a notch at the edge of the bracket). The next tricky thing is its
takes trial and error to actually get the hole location perfect. My
measurements were off such that I had to redrill and move the center of the
hole towards the front of the car, and then it just fit nicely.
I have to wrap up a couple of other things before I can run the car and
give feedback on how it feels compared the MK3 engine mounts.

Regards,
/Khalid 90 T, with stiffer engine mounts 8)
