If you only paid $600 for the car to begin with...
Why are you choosing to spend money to upgrade parts on it and bitching that the replacement parts cost more than you paid for the car?!
However, if you look at it this way ---> $600 chassis, $400 struts, $400 tires, $400 misc gaskets/hoses, $150 tune-up, ~$500 for miscellaneous parts... You'll have one helluva reliable car that'll serve you well for a couple of years, and you'll only have invested $2500 into the whole thing!!
If you bitch and moan about dumping money into a 15-20 year old car that you picked up for cheap, then you need to buy something newer that doesn't need so much TLC.

OK, Thanks to one of you guys, I have some nice, 'new' springs to put on
my '88. Now, since the shocks are old, I figure while I have the springs
off, might as well replace them! We had this discussion last summer, but
I never got to it.
Now, a few of you have told me to use Konis. I paid $600 for the car.
The best price I can get on the Konis is $107 each! That's 2/3 of what
the car cost!
Bilsteins are just as bad. And Tokico Illuminas aren't any better
pricewise. So, here's my options. I used to work at a CarQuest, and they
still like me there, so I can get KYB Gr-2s <$40 each. That makes my
cost <$160 all the way around. The Konis look like >$400, and the
Illuminas are the same. I haven't gotten pricing for the standard
Tokicos yet. KYB AGX don't seem to be available for this car.
Bearing in mind I would go UP TO $300, anybody have any ideas for a good
shock in this range, or where I can get the mentioned items for this
price? I'm going nutz on Google, and keep coming up within $$$ of each
other.
IIRC, someone here mentioned the Konis were about $75 each somewhere...
