Though YMMV my experience seems to be that the age is more important than
the mileage.... 

Around 10 years things seem to get dicey.

I repave the belt on a 90 Prizm in 2000 with just over 200k on the original
belt. 

The belt on my wife's MR2 just failed after around 75,000 miles and I had
replaced it in 1994.  The oil pump was seeping so maybe it was a combination
of the two.

I wouldn't pick on the Gates belt too much... 80 k seems a little early but
I was advising customers who had an interference engines to consider
replacing the belt after 70k or 5 years just to be safe.
