You can buy new block dowel pins for $0.75 each from Toyota, so I'm not sure why you would want to delete them. Also as noted, unless the engine is out you have to put the studs in afterwards due to clearance issues with the firewall. The dowels keep the alignment to within a few mils which is much tighter than you will get with studs alone.
For the block lapping, I would suggest using diamond paste to make the job go much faster if you are not using it already. MSCDirect.com has an excellent selection of grit sizes.

Hi list.
An ebay seller handles Titan Motorsports items, including a 1.4 MM MHG for $135 including shipping. Just curious if anyone has experience with Titan products. The statement is made that is is "just like the HKS" gasket but it does not state which one of the three made by HKS.
I'm getting a '91 turbo with 103K miles from a dealer in Houston from ebay. After 18 months I have still not gotten the JDM engine together for my '90 due to time constraints. Also the '90 has 156K on the chassis and has a BHG. The Houston car looks good except for a slight right front fender bend and the dashboard pulling away from the instrument cluster top cover. A new (used) dash is already here.
Since my workplace has a shutdown during the week of July 4th, I intend installing a metal HG, probably the Titan item. I have what I need to lap the top of the block and measure it for flatness, but am not looking forward to the task. The work will be preventative, since I'll later be going to higher boost, Lex AFM.550 CC ND injectors, HKS 80 mm cat back exhaust and a 57 trim turbo presently on its way to California for rework. I already have a rebuilt head for the JDM engine, which will be put on the '91 and another on the way to complete the JDM engine for storage. I have a 2 mm Cometic gasket, but with the material taken off the JDM block (it rolled over on the concrete floor once and got damaged) that gasket will be for the spare engine.
Thanks.
BernieK
PS: Given the use of ARP head studs, are the block to head dowel pins still necessary?
another question is did you have the flywheel resurfaced when you put the clutch in?
