Of course Reg does the techtom ECU re-program which re-writes the spark advance curve, but 
overall, the knock sensors are very dependable.  In addition, with good gas (91+ R+M/2 octane) 
we actually want more spark advance than the factory gives us.  This allows for faster 
spooling of the turbo, thus more power lower in the RPM range.
