You are confusing the radiator light for an intercooler light.  It reminds 
me of the white house when it first came on I thought i was getting an 
important call from the president. ;-) The light means you have low coolant 
in your resivour or sensor is sticking.  As far as black smoke that would be 
unburnt fuel, ie. rich running or the ever so common blown head gasket.  So 
we come to the ever so common welcome to the world of mk3.  Metal head 
gastet with studs to replace stock hg and bolts.  Or perhaps you are lucky 
and someone stuck some bosh pos plugs in your car and there fouled.  Get 
someone to check for combustion gasses in cooling sys.  If its bad enough 
you will hear exaust sound comming from radiator while running, or just 
pressure shooting out the coolant.  Remove cap, start car if the radiator is 
full you may get a gush of coolant if you have a bhg.
