[Supras] speedometer

My speedometer is squealing as I drive.  It is driving me nuts, so I 
took the dash apart.  I found that the cable has some white grease on 
it.  I am not sure what to do.  Can I add some multi-purpose grease to 
it?  Can I use WD-40 on it?  I also have some white lithium grease that 
I use on the breaks.  Would that do it?  ...or do I need something 
completely different?

I would love to fix this tonight, and be able to drive it (with my 
sanity intact) to work tomorrow.
