I wasn't thinking abut the contaminants or other junk around the plugs.

My experience with a similar engine, however (4A-GE, a 4-cylinder
version used in the Corolla GTS) has led me to believe nothing but
sludge collects here. I did 4 plug replacements in 260,000 miles on that
car, using only NGK Platinum...

I guess it's off to the dealer I go!
