James:

It is easy to tell if you have the fluid filled mounts. They are about 3" high, round, and have corragations like the Michelin tire man. They were first used in '89, so you may have either the old square style of the newer ones.

The fluid mounts are notorious for pulling apart, particularly on the left side where the engine tends to lift. On the advise of another post on this list about 6 months ago (with photo links), I got a set of '98 MkIV mounts, the same in dimensions as the fluid ones except for one locating lug which needs to be ground off. They are cheaper too, about $54 from discount internet dealers. They are VERY strong, but of course do not offer the isolation that the fluid mounts do. The fluid mounts do have a steel stop backup bolted to the block which contacts a projection on an inner steel member in the fluid mount convolutions. But the MkIV mounts are steel crimped over polyurethane and are much stronger. Beware: They must be 98's. There earlier ones are much bigger and will not fit.

If you have the fluid mounts, you cannot use the early square mounts without changing the crossmember or making spacers.

    Hope this helps.

        Bernie Katz
