Marty:

Thanks for the reply. I was shocked at costs of turbochargers on the
other side of the pond from us. Shipping by sea should not be that
expensive. Do import or duty fees apply? I can't imagine that parts are so
much rarer in the land of Erin go Braugh or the UK than is the case here.

The reply you sent is much appreciated, as I can see that it took time
to do. Unfortunately the ebay links do not work ("page not responding"
errors appear), but that does not prevent me from searching on the items
within each link. Honestly, though, I want to keep the engine as stock
appearing as possible, so the external waste gate option is probably not
viable to consider. At the state inspector's option, an underbonnet
examination can take place here in New Jersey as a function of the
inspector's will. Last time I went through inspection, the HKS LET-16
exhaust almost came into question. The first thing done by one inspector at
the station entrance was to rev the engine and make a JUDGEMENT (not
measurement) of noise. The LET-16 is a very quiet exhaust for its size (80
or 85mm pipe, but a little "bassy" at maybe 2000 RPM). The inspection
station is a large corrugated steel building, entirely sound reflective on
the inside. Although large overhead doors at each end are open to four or
five lanes for inspection, there are acoustic resonances developed within as
a function of building geometry. Some of the "inspectors" are idiots, and
aside from hard data obtained from instrumentation, allow their emotions of
the day to determine if a car passes or fails. Before automated measurement
of steering and linkage slop, an old Ford van I had failed for front end
looseness. With the steering wheel on center (important in a worm and
sector steering box), there was virtually no play. I had to go to the
supervisor to have it re-examined. Some time ago, another inspector told me
that exhaust emissions are lowered by a CATALYSTIC convertor.

Such is the price of bureaucracy. The emission test dynamometers will
be removed at some point soon, since OBDII cars now represent the majority
of those on the road. At least that is a change worth looking forward to.

    Take care.

            Bernie
