just to Add a little food for thought,,
Over here in the UK second hand (used) ct26 turbos are few and far between.
We can but new or upgraded but theu cost the Equiv of $1900 - $2300 each
Now today we were chatting and I though togather what *may* work as a
slightly upgraded alternative.
Possibly and option for someone who dosnt go the full T4 Route.
Now remember this was for UK owners who dont have the rebulders and prices
you guys have..
"Imagine your ct26 has bitten the dust...
Generally your left with these options...
option 1 :- Replace with another used one and hope it lasts
option 2 :- Replace with a new or fully reconned unit
option 3:- Replace with a hybrid unit
option 4:- Go the full t4 upgrade route
What i want to do is introduce and affordable alternative into the equation,
for those who are quite happy with the 320hp mark and a very steetable quick
spooling turbo setup.
The idea would be to retain as much OE components as possible and keep the
price below £380.
1. Turbo choice - lots out there big small cheap expensive. So this is what
needs to be nailed down. The hybrid t3/4 market has been the most explosive
development in recent years. And now they are getting up in size to.
As an example im gonna use this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T4-60-Trim-Stage-3-Garrett-Turbo-w-oil-Lin
e-Feed-Kit_W0QQitemZ180080508244QQihZ008QQcategoryZ33742QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
this is equiv to a TO4E, which in theory should see the 7m into the 300
mark.
£170
Now how do we bolt that to our stock manifold? well a simple ct26 to t3
converter should do the trick...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MR2-T3-T4-TURBO-ADAPTER-FLANGE-CT25-TO-T3-T4_
W0QQitemZ300075668976QQihZ020QQcategoryZ33742QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
And includes a take off for our 38mm waste gate.
£70
So we get use an external wastegate!! 38mm with a screamer pipe
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/38mm-external-wastegate-H22-K20A-DSM-PROBE-VW
_W0QQitemZ270084817920QQihZ017QQcategoryZ33742QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
£25+P&P
Ok, now we are getting somewhere, next oil feed and return, which is the
easy bit.
The above turbo comes with a feed line which we will use, but to fit it to
the block we use a small adapter -4an to 12mm x 1.25 which installs in the
blocks oil feed port.
£10
Now oil return, we use our existing return pipe but cut it about 3" above
its mounting above the sump. and using a return kit, where we put the return
hose over our return pipe and clamp it.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T4-TURBO-OIL-LINE-RETURN-KIT-OIL-DRAIN-10A
N-FITTING_W0QQitemZ320076953950QQihZ011QQcategoryZ33742QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrd
Z1QQcmdZViewItem
£35
As we dont use the water feed and return anymore we simply loop them.
now the last step. probably the trickiest. we remove our existing Turbo
elbow.
We need to now fab up a partial downpipe. Fisrt we need a flange to fit our
turbo..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/T3-T3-T4-TURBO-Outlet-GASKET-Big-Center-Exhau
st-Hole_W0QQitemZ330081394248QQihZ014QQcategoryZ33742QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
£10
next, we use a long 90* 2.5 radius leg and measure from turbo to existing
downpipe.
£20
We can then mark our existing downpipe to where we are going to cut it so
that it is level with the bend coming from the turbo. Then its a simple
welding job of bend to the turbo flange and then bend to the existing
downpipe.
We need to loose our existing o2 sensor - as we no longer use the Elbow.
So we purchase a univeral o2 Sensor
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lambda-O2-Sensor-Oxygen-Sensor-Universal-3-WIRE_W0QQit
emZ110085408408QQihZ001QQcategoryZ72205QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
£18
we mount this to the new downpipe using a drilling and welding a simple
sensor bung
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/O2-Sensor-Bung-Stainless-Steel-Oxygen-Sensor_
W0QQitemZ180079624377QQihZ008QQcategoryZ42610QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZVi
ewItem
£5
So there you have it, £363 and a little imagination, looking in the right
places, you could in theory build quite a good little setup to replace your
ageing ct26
and with the price of these turbos falling day by day, if it lasts 12months
at 25 psi you wont complain.
"
So in theory, there are other options other than full t4 or ct26 rebuilds

to exhaust clipping " However, by just modifying only the compressor side
(ie, a non-Gas Light/Innovative turb), the turbo will be limited by the
exhaust side. Basically, when one has upgraded the compressor for a higher
psi and RPM, the exhaust cannot get out fast enough. So, the turbine wheel
is clipped to allow a little more flow at the expense of lag to allow for
increased top end. The large compressor wheel also has its share of lag,
which most don't mind for the absolute kick in the pants it offers once
spooled up."

rebuilder I spoke with recommended only 50 trim. It could have been
because at least for the moment, I'm remaining with two cats. He also
cautioned against exhaust wheel trimming. But, each rebuilder has his own
opinion.

The exhaust was trimmed a bit as well. It pulls much harder all the way
up to redline and seems to really coming on strong around 3000 rpm. I
haven't really missed the lower rpm spin up of the stock trim due to my
driving style as I pretty much am up in rpm to achieve desired speed then
hit cruise control.
> Currently I'm running stock AFM with FIPK, stock 440 injectors and 3"
defcon downpipe, test pipe and 3" crinkly bend exhaust (previous owner).
I'll probably put the random technologies 3" cat back in line next time I
have the exhaust apart. I really didn't notice any difference between the
test pipe and the 3" RT cat, I just removed the cat before the rebuild of
the turbo due to the excessive oil leaking into the intake.
