Protecting the doors...  This brings up another point.  With an automatic, it's 
easy enough to force check that the car is in park  before allowing the doors 
to open, I suppose, but what about with a standard transmission.  I imagine 
that nobody wants that door to open while the car is in motion, or allow the 
car to start moving when the door is down.  (Just seems like a BAD idea to me!)

There is, however, no way to keep a driver from starting to drive away while 
the door is open.

I realise that there's no way to enforce that with regular doors either, except 
that the doors will flap around, but if the door opens with the push of a 
button, I'd really rather not have that happen accidentally!
