[Supras] AFM (hot wire type)

Code 31 is a short or open in the AFM circuit. It has nothing to do with air leaks.

I think I may have found the problem.

I have a cooleeze intake pipe between the AFM and the turbo (replacement for accordion hose). The coupling between the cooleeze ant the inlet of the turbo is not the best fit. The coupling is too short and I have found there is some air leaking between there. That would attribute the code 31 for AFM malfunction.

As for code 71 (EGR). I notice after driving with the AC on, I do not get the check engine light. After I drive without the AC on I do get a check engine light. I think this has to do with the RPM's at ideal. When the AC is one the RPM's are a little higher and when the AC is off the RPM's are lower. The EGR temperature sensor must be detecting this, so when the RPM's are low it will make the check engine light turn. So in turn I feel it still may be attributed from the same connection of the cooleeze intake pipe and turbo coupling. With the air leaking, it is making the RPM's low at ideal because of the air-fuel mixture a little off. With the RPM"s higher at ideal with the AC on it must be matching the air-fuel mixture about right and meeting the requirements for both the AFM and EGR.

This is my suspicion.

I am trying to get a longer coupling from cooleeze but it is taking a while. I am going to call Greg from cooleeze soon to try to get the coupling sooner.

If this fixes it I will let you all know.

Thanks for all your input.

Brandon

Code 31 is a short or open in the AFM circuit. It is almost always a wiring
problem as that part of the harness gets very brittle from the exhaust heat. If
you have a multimeter you can diagnose this quick by unplugging the engine
harness at the ECU and AFM and checking for continuity.

Your bad intercooler hose will not trigger code 31. It will cause a so-called
boost leak and will make the engine run rich under boost, and if bad enough can
trigger a code 32 (fuel cut).

Code 71 is most likely another wiring problem. I would check for an open
circuit in the sensor wiring to ECU.

That is the problem.?

I have a new EGR and a new EGR temp sensor in.?

As for the AFM, I have not done anything yet.

I was wondering if a leak between the turbo outlet into the intercooler
may be the problem.? I know the rubber pipe needs to be changed.? I
have ordered hardpipes to replace all the pipes and will try that before
 anything else I guess.

Code 31 and 71 should be easy to deal with.

71 especially. That is the EGR temp sensor. I assume you have an EGR
 with
a temp sensor, it is usually unplugged since it is hard to reach.

If you happen to have an EGR without a temp sensor, a resistor added to
 the
harness will satisfy the ECU and erase the code.

If you have NO EGR, then you probably won't pass :)

Code 31, AFM, what have you done there?
