[Supras] Help in diagnosing strange sound - UPDATE / RANT

Darren, your wierd compressor noise is likely the exhaust manifold leaking as you suspect. My first exhaust manifold gasket replacement convinced me to buy a right angle drill, modify (shorten) a drill bit and install heli-coils for all of the studs. Most recently I went ahead and heli-coiled the same on the NA head I bought and used for the rebuild. Even with new Toyota studs and nuts my turbo comes loose every few weeks which is a real PITA but I've become used to it after this many years.

hth,

Ok, yesterday evening after the engine cooled down, I was
probing/poking/listening for anything that could be making that kinda air
compressor motor sound on my 92T. At this point, I'm starting to think it's
the leaking manifold gasket......sounds weird? Well, I've noticed this leak
for a while now and I've attributed it to the fumes in the cabin mystery
which I posted here a few weeks ago.
The leak is getting worse and worse. I've listened to the sound carefully
and it sounds like.....get this......tugga tugga tugga tugga tugga
tugga.........yes, this coming from the leak on the manifold gasket way at
the back behind the turbo.
The more I drive this supra daily, the more things I discover is going bad
and needs maintenance. Here's a lists I've got so far:
- Leaking exhaust manifold
- busted rear shocks....leaked oil on my garage floor like 2 years ago
- leaking oil hose.......the hard one behind the alternator
- check engine light....stays on for about 5 mins when engine first started
cold - asked about this on the list a while back.....Code 21 - Oxygen Sensor
Heater Signal
- AC.....converted to r134a last Friday and still cold for the 80F Tampa
days.....who says r134a not as cold???? Still looking for oily residue
anywhere that could indicate freon leakage

Another thing I've noticed also is while in stop and go traffic, when taking
off, the engine sounds noisy....like the oil pressure is not building up
fast enough or something. Reason I think this is because it's the same
sound I get right after I do and oil change and start the engine and rev it
about 1500 and the noise just dies out after about 10 seconds.

So far, these are the problems I've noticed since I started driving this car
daily. After I get the Tercel back on the road, I'll start working on the
Supra.

I enjoy driving my 92T and I enjoy working on it and fixing it up........I
told my wife this Supra will die of old age instead of driven to death with
high mileage/high usage.
