Pull the plugs... could you have a blown head gasket and it leaked coolant
into one of the cylinders?
This could explain the shredded belt....
This would also explain why you can only turn the engine so far.
The only way I would think a valve could hit the piston is if the head had
been machined a lot... Kind of doubt full

Subject: [Supras] Partially Locked Engine - '86.5 Supra
Group,
I think my supra days are coming to an end (after 17 years !!).
Before reading on, you need to know I'm not a novice at car work
including installing cam belts/chains. Been doing my own car work since
about 1973.
You guys were correct about my timing belt breaking (shredding
is more like what happened). But it gets more bizarre. I removed,
scraped, cleaned, & vacuumed the old belt out. Installed the new belt,
with new water pump and idler pulley. Then, after reassembly, turned
the engine over two revolutions using a breaker bar on the crank pulley
- went nice & smooth and cam marks stayed lined up. After charging the
battery, I attempted to start the car. No start & it didn't sound right
when being cranked. So, I put the breaker bar back on the pulley and
tried to turn it to TDC (compression). At about 10 degrees BTDC the
pulley would not turn any further. Turned the crank the other way and
it would not go any further than about 10 degrees ATDC. Cam timing
marks looked good (I've done the timing belt job four or five times with
no problems). So, I removed everything, except the water pump, and
there were no crank obstructions.......
Here's my question. Has anyone ever heard of bending a valve
(with the cam timing correct) when cranking when the engine previously
turned over freely by hand ??? Finally, has anyone experienced a locked
engine from anything other than a bent valve (excluding thrown rods,
etc.) ?? Before belt broke, engine ran fine with good oil pressure.
Most likely, I will have to get rid of both Supras since I don't
have the time to tear it down (or the space to park it - too many cars).
If anyone out there has a MA70 turbo with a bad body/interior, you
should at least look at mine as replacements. Both have excellent
bodies and one has an excellent interior. Hopefully, I'll get lucky
(ha, ha, ha, right), and the head won't have to come off - after all,
these are non-interference engines, right !?!?!
Appreciate The Help, Skip
'86 & '88 NAs (now both parts cars ??)
