[Supras] Need Suggestions for 91T Auto Tranny

The 2nd gear has gone out on my 91T, automatic. Would it be cheaper for me to purchase another tranny or have mine rebuilt ? I have tried to find out the exact tranny that goes in my car and have been told that Toyota used more than one type. My car has 144,000 miles on it. A local tranny guy has offered to rebuild mine for $1000-$1200. I have seen trannys for sale on eBay and thought about purchasing one but I don't know exactly which one my car needs. Any suggestions would be greatly helpful ...
