To retrofit a car to support ethanol of any rating (from mild, thru E85 to pure Ethanol), you have to first have an -anol fuel pump (kind that will support ethanol, methanol or any alcohol based fuels.) can usually be found from drag racing catalogs as race fuel is usually methanol. next, all the rubber that the fuel will come in contact has to be replaced with Viton. this is usually just stainless steel lines that may be installed. and third, aluminum that the fuel comes in contact with should be coated with nickel (only really looking at the fuel rail, not the entire head). if its set up like that the car will support normal gas and/or ethanol in the tank. but pretty much look up what parts would be needed to build a race engine to support methanol.
My friend did research into this for a project car he is building. It's an old VW Vanagon with a chevy 350 engine in it that he is making flex fuel compatible. his plan is to actually make his own fuel for cheaper and run pure E100 with the option to use gasoline if he is taking long trips.-Sean

My understanding is that the American car makers > are shipping FFVs because there getting wavers to get a better overall > product line MPG rating and avoid fines. Also making a flex fuel > vehicle only adds about $200 to the cost.
