j/k. the pre-cat and cat do some muffling of the engine sound by themselves. are they stock cats or do you have high-flow cats. stock ones can muffle pretty well by themselves. as for broken/clogged cats, there are tell-tale symptoms to diagnose them without having to remove them to check, I just don't remember them off the top of my head (aside from obvious power problems from the MASSIVE amount of backpressure). i know if the catalyst inside breaks up, you would have a loud exhaust as well as possible loud rattling noise from cat (my friends cat went like that in his RX-7 from the flame front shooting thru it). my car has a working cat on it but it has an exhaust leak and its only a hair louder than my sport muffler so i really didn't notice it for a while.
