[Supras] Muffler broke off

Hi,
     My muffler decided to break off while the car was sitting for a few
days that I drove my new old Ford F350 (totally different experience/
apples 'n oranges). Anyway, I noticed that the engine sound wasn't much if
any louder without the muffler. What does that mean? Does having a cat and
a pre-cat automatically muffle most of the engine noise? Does the muffling
without a muffler possibly mean a broken cat on the inside? Just curious...
