I know I'm now appending to a stale topic... but for my $0.02:

I switched from the mechanical to elec. after mech. clutch wore out.
My key motivation for elec. was that I was able to wire the new elec. 
fan (Perma-cool 14") and the existing small AUX. AC fan so that they 
both came on with high AC load which dramatically improved my AC performance.

Cooling (radiator) performance has been fine.

Now it is a couple years later and I have converted my R-12 system to 
R134 and the hi-pressure sensor in the AC circuit (which cut the fans 
on as needed) has stopped working. Replacing the switch would cause 
me to have to vent the R-134 charge so I'm kinda screwed here anyway.....

Need to do something for this year's summer AC season soon.
