The common problem is people dont think it is important to re torque the
crank pulley bolt after changing the timing belt.

Subject: [Supras] Found Overheating Problem
My 91T had been overheating for a couple of years...could only drive it
short distances from home. Considering how much I enjoy this car, I refused
to part with it. Initially, I thought it was a BHG even though the head
gasket had been replaced 3 yrs ago with an HKS metal head gasket.
Recently, I drove it home and it started making a loud banging noise
from under the hood. I finally broke down and had a guy look at it that used
to work on Supra's at a local dealership. The balancer on the crank pulley
had come off. (I found the balancer in my yard after the car was towed !) I
was told that it had taken a very long time for this to happen and this was
most likely the cause of the overheating problem as well as other problems,
ie., headlights dimming, etc.
The mechanic ended up shimming the crankshaft and replacing the crank
pulley. He also replaced the timing belt and some of the hard to reach hoses
around the engine, among other things. The only problem I am having now is
the automatic transmission which, basically, has no 2nd gear...time for a
rebuild !
When I initially talked to the mechanic about my problems, he had an
idea that the crank pulley was the problem (sight unseen). He said that it
appeared to be a common problem with the MKIII Supra's. If I am wrong,
correct me. I just felt I would pass this info to the list in hopes that it
may help someone.
