Possiblilities from experience....
1. You still have air in the head. I've put my car on an incline of about
45 degrees (be safe and put blocks behind the wheels) to get the air to
come out the radiator with the cap off. You wont believe the amount of
air that can be stuck in the head. Get ready to put in a lot of fluid.
I've also seen people buy a t connector connected in the middle of the
heater hose(which is the highest point of the cooling system), and then
they would take the cap off the t connector to get the air out. (smartest
and easiest)
2. Your headgasket is leaking. Did you make sure the head and block was
clean (no residue) when you put the new one in? Did you torque it down /
in the right order?
3. After driving at 60+mph and coming into town and slowing down, does it
start going red? I've had this happen because my fan clutch was bad /
weak. The fan wasnt spinning fast enough to cool. If your fan doesnt
sound like a jet when you give it gas, you've got a bad fan clutch. It's
about 35bucks.
Good luck! I've been in your shoes.
