[Supras] Update on MegaSquirt

its not modifying because of shortcomings. the unit was entirely built from scratch as open source meaning that anybody can add onto the product to further its features. the TEC3 is all done by the manufacturer only. if you wanted to edit its code to add a feature it doesn't have, you would have to contact them to do it and there's no guarantee they would even pay any attention to the request. the MS you could just do it yourself and post it up for others to see and pass it to the top developers to incorporate into the main firmware. That's how my friend got into it. The MS used to not be able to handle rotary engines. so he wrote the code to let it. Now he's one of the main developers of the code.
The MS has been available since 2001 and has gone thru 3 board revisions and 2 controller chip to further enhance its capabilities and resolution. The main benefit is the fact that everything is open so you can fix any and all problems yourself and even upgrade to newer features for very little money. If the TEC4 came out and had more features that you wanted, you would have to shell out another $2500 to get it whereas the MS you would only really need to replace the controller chip and that's less than $100.
its $190 ($329 pre-assembled) for the V3 board with the MS1 chip (enough to get the car running with fuel control only), $52 for the MSnSpark daughterboard to add ignition control, and another $90 and you can upgrade to the MS2 chip which has much higher resolution and stepper motor control. There is already work on building a newer board that has WAY more I/O channels available including using CAN (Car area Network) to hook up other modules (controllers, sensors, actuators) as well as moving to an even better controller chip. Other people have built modules to control VVt-i and V-Tech, there are separate relay boards if you want to run all the wiring to there and protect the ECU from incorrect wiring problems as well as making running wiring inside dirt easy. there's LCD screens so you can read sensor readings or tuning info without a laptop.
I highly recommend reading the FAQ at http://www.megasquirt.info/ as it has much better info. Most of the newer information is over on their forums at http://www.msefi.com
People felt the same way about Linux when it first came out and look where it is now.(I still prefer BSD though, either way it isn't SCO controlled)

Not being familiar with the Megasquirt software, I don't no it's exact capabilities. However, it is a newer product on the market and by the fact that you and others are modifying it because of perceived shortcomings shows that it is probably not as fully functioned or as 'Bullet proof' as others on the market. If cost is not a concern and proven compatability and reliability are important, you would be wise to select an EMS that doesn't require tinkering (unless that is what floats your boat). The hobby side of car modifying is what it's about for me too, but I'm not a computer geek and I chose to buy a product that doesn't require me to have that specific knowledge. BTW, the TEC3 is equally as customizable with tech support local to those in the US. I don't sell TEC3s, just think that it is an over looked EMS in the import world. It can be a final solution where as others are a stop gap measure (now lets talk about money!).

So i should spend $2500 for an electromotive instead of $400 for a MS that can
do all the same features and is fully opensource for development of software as
well as hardware? I bet i could shoot a bullet thru a TEC3 so that nomenclature
doesnt count towards electronics. reliability wise, the MS is as reliable as any
high dollar unit.
