Welcome to the supra's comunity :)
While I'm less experienced than many others on the
list I'll share my observations of the symptoms that
resulted in my recent rebuild.
I believe I over-revved the engine (missed speed
shift) which resulted in the "knock" that appeared in
the bottom end. As I continued to drive the car with
heavier oil ie straight 50W near the end I noticed the
knock more in an idle or no-load condition while
driving. I didn't hear it much when accelerating or
decelerating. It turned out to be a rod bearing that
was making the racket.
Rather than taking the chance on a JDM engine I bit
the bullet and rebuilt my own engine but I had the
luxury of having another vehicle to drive during the
interim.
I have noticed and others have commented that the
valve train on the 7M can be a bit loud if the valves
aren't adjusted in spec but you should be able to ell
the difference by finding the location of the noise
with a stethescope if it's not immediately obvious
where it's coming from.
