[Supras] starting issues

I don't know if you ever received my first response but my wife's 5fse
jumped a tooth and the car ran like the timing was retarded.

I have never seen it happen before but when I removed it the belt was
missing the normal 10 or so teeth where the crank gear was and there was a
spot where a couple of teeth were missing in another section far away from
the final failure point.

I drove the car for a week like that until the belt finally failed.

If I would have even thought that the belt could jump a tooth I would have
checked the car with timing light.

I am pretty sure that would have proved this. I guess the exhaust cam
could skip a tooth instead of the intake or the crank but given the size of
the gear I would assume that it would be harder to skip a tooth on the upper
gears than the lower gear.

If nothing else just line up the crank pulley and check the distributor. It
will either point to #1 or be 180 degrees off. Or you could just remove
the timing belt top cover. I am pretty sure the top cover is removable with
out removing the upper mount, even if it isn't the upper mount isn't that
hard to remove.

If the belt has jumped the compression will be off on one or more cylinders.

Remember to change the lower and oil pump seals. That is most likely what
dried out my belt and hastened it's failure

Not true, i sue it all the time at it works quite well. but in this case i
meant to say starting fluid. if the rollover switch was activated, it would
cut fuel which would be replaced by the fuel i spray into the t/b.
i actually kinda think that the timing belt slipped but i wanted to get
confirmation. it is a 5sfe engine.

Carb Cleaner doesn't ignite well... In fact, the last time I used it on a
throttle body the car took forever to restart.

We always kept a can of starting fluid around to diagnosis non fuel starting
problems.

Does the Toyota have a roll over switch that could have been activated by
the collision? Fords do this a lot....

well i tried what you guy suggested, we are getting close. i'm getting spark
at the coil and the dist and in the cylinders. i spray carb cleaner in the
t/b and no go. Car was in front end accident and stopped running at that
point.
you guys game me some good pointers. I have check the 2 drivers side pistons
and they are getting pulse sparks so the dist is moving. At this point i'm
thinking the timing bet didnt break but stretched or skipped teeth because
it wont start.
Another question folks, does the check engine diagnostic proceedure to
tirgger codes by shorting terminals...are the trmainal the same on 91 celica
as it is on 91 supra?
would a check engine casue starting problem if i'm providing fuel.
My thoughts are no...
anyone?
