Subject: "Inexpensive" struts
I recently purchased a set of slightly used springs, and want to replace them. The struts also need replacement, so, while the springs are off, we may as well get to it!
I am looking for an inexpensive but decent replacement for the struts. The OEM struts are usually Tokico for Toyotas, but I have recently seen not too good write ups on these in this forum. But, I think I am a bit different from the rest of you!
For one, I don't compete with my car, there are no mods, it's bone stock and aging 'sort of' gracefully, but has more issues than I think I will deal with. It is a great daily driver, but about it. So, I am going to treat it to an 'easy retirement'. I drive everywhere at 50 MPH, living in a rural area like I do, with occasional jaunts on the highway up to 70-75MPH. The highway driving is straight and level, but the secondary road driving involves a LOT of twisty-turney roads that can be manuvered at 50-60MPH (please, don't notify the local Constabulatory!!)
So, I am looking for an inexpensive stock type strut that will give me a good ride and decent handling. The car almost drives like it's on rails now, so I suppose anything I throw in there with the new springs will suffice.
My leanings are towards the less expensive KYBs; I have used them on my Corolla GT-S the last 2 times and they behaved very well, but I think they have been bought by Monroe or someone and am afraid their reputation may have suffered. There are also Konis and Bilsteins, but the models I have seen listed are much more than I want to put into this car! Monroe and other off the rack units are OUT, unless someone has a compelling arguement for thier use!
I am figuring a budget of the $38 I have seen the KYBs listed at, to possibly $60-70 for something decent.
Thanks!
